full time Principal SWE/Tech Lead - Ruby on Rails

at RedBubble in Sf

RedBubble (www.redbubble.com) is a website for people throughout the world to share their creative passions. The site operates as a gallery, community, market place, and fulfillment service for a wide variety of art – including photography, design and digital art.

RedBubble was launched in Australia in February 2007 and has gained significant traction over the last 18 months (24 million page views per month, 70,000 members, 100,000 items sold and shipped in the last 18 months). The company is well funded by a group of private investors who ‘know the Internet’. The business model has been demonstrated – now the question is will RedBubble be a top 5000, 500, or 50 website.

In order to fully realize this potential, RedBubble relocated from Australia to San Francisco in September 2008.
The Position

You are the person around whom RedBubble will build a world-class technical team. You’ll have experience building and leading high performance technical teams and will be comfortable working in a start-up environment. In fact you’ll thrive on the challenges of a start-up.

Responsibilities/Most Important Functional Tasks

  • Leadership and mentoring of the development team
  • Ruby on Rails application development including data modeling and design
  • Ultimately responsible for the software produced by RedBubble and keeping the website up … and going fast.

Background Required

  • Experience building and leading high performance technical teams
  • At least two years experience in a start-up environment
  • You’ll be experienced and comfortable with the full stack. Everything from hardware, networking, operating system and hosting issues, MySQL database optimization, application development, HTML, and even some CSS. You won’t necessarily be working deeply in all of these areas, but your staff will – and sometimes you’ll need to dip in.
  • Significant experience building consumer facing e-commerce or social networking websites
  • Significant commercial experience with Ruby on Rails, agile development, and leading agile teams
  • Understanding and appreciation of the role of design and usability – it’s not just about the tech at RedBubble
  • Experience with usability testing and A:B testing (experience with multivariate testing would be well regarded)
  • Significant experience with the process of unpacking ideas and working out the best way to execute them from the technical, user, and business perspectives
  • A very good degree in Engineering
